‘MATT ZARB, The Wild Rover’ - 2016 Archibald entry

Matt is a kind and generous friend but he’s also inspiring, talented and funny. I wanted to portray a man who’s seen, and understands, the good and bad side of life. Shining in his eyes are memories of great joy and sorrow; for one cannot exist without the other.

Matt’s also a charismatic entertainer who loves to play and sing. I’ve shown him on stage at The Jolly Roger - still in the spotlight and carefully holding his old Maton guitar. Though chipped, painted and graffitied it has been Matt’s companion, and fellow traveller, for nearly thirty years.
